Artist statement:
"The purpose of this project was to explore the possibilities painting had to offer within the
context of public space. It soon evolved from painting to "pictorial processes", as the
medium painting proved too static and demarcated to deal with newer spatial notions, such
as relational space. This concept of space takes into account not only the physical
qualities but also the temporal ones in the form of actions and processes which constitute
space. Furthermore, I decided to investigate these possibilities by means of the pictorial in
order to focus on the perceptual processes that make up art as well as space and to avoid
repeating established structures embedded in discourse.
The site for this ongoing project is Berlin. Discarded by their former owners, I take pieces
of furniture and other objects that have been placed on the streets of the city. Most of them
have already been disassembled, so as to optimize space and transportation and are
waiting to be taken by the next user. No longer furniture, they only very subtly refer to a
certain object or function, leading to the materials and surfaces gaining more
importance. Becoming a medium to record spatial processes, I photograph the materials in
the surroundings where I find them and collect them. I then take them to my studio to work
on them and bring them back after some time to the same site, where I photograph them
one more time and leave them."
